In the spring of 1819, a young fellow by the name of Henry Shaw from Sheffield, England landed in the little French village if St. Louis, Missouri. There he set up a business selling hardware to the settlers that had been heading out from the "Gateway to the West." Business was great and he was able to retire by the age of 40. Ole Henry would quickly turn out to be the largest landowner in the metropolis. He constructed Tower Grove Home, which grew to become his estate, and purchased fairly a bit of land around it.
