In the spring of 1819, a younger fellow by the name of Henry Shaw from Sheffield, England landed in the little French village if St. Louis, Missouri. There he established up a business selling hardware to the settlers that were heading out from the "Gateway to the West." Business was good and he was in a position to retire by the age of forty.
